In this section of the site you'll find all the information you need for success in the part 2 test of driving ability.

There are pages on all of the driving manoeuvres that you need to know and how to avoid the common errors that trainees make, a complete run down of the ms-psl hazard routine with advice on the common ms-psl errors, advice on some of the advanced observation techniques that your trainer may not have demonstrated, and we'll be explaining why part 2 is every bit as important as part 3 to your ADI training.

Part two is a test of your driving ability. This test normally lasts for about an hour. You are limited to three attempts at part two. If you fail three times you will have to wait two years from the date that you passed your Part One exam before you can start over again. You will then have to re-take Part One.

A common theme running through this site is our firm belief that your part 2 training is of paramount importance. Part 2 is the foundation on which your part 3 skills are built.

The traditional method of trying to qualify is to get through part 1 without any assistance, take as little training as possible to get through part 2, then spend a lot of time and money on part 3.

This route to qualifying is without doubt the most common one taken by trainees. It may also account, in part, for the very high failure rates at the part 3 level. We have seen many times, that insufficient or ineffective training at part 2 is the root cause of a great many problems at part 3. It is common to have trainees attend our part 3 recovery courses, only to find that their part 2 skills need work before we progress to the part 3 training.

It is entirely satisfactory to get through part 1 under your own efforts, but your part 2 training should be thorough, structured and developed as a firm foundation for the work to come at part 3.

You need to demonstrate expert handling of the car controls and a progressive yet defensive driving approach. During the test you will show that you can control the vehicle safely, follow correct road procedure, recognise and deal with any hazards that are encountered using the MS-PSL routine and complete some basic set manoeuvres.

The test will require you to demonstrate your driving skills on a wide range of roads that can include dual carriageways, motorways, town and city centres, one-way systems and country roads.

You will also perform set driving manoeuvres from the DSA syllabus, including:

The emergency stop
Left reverse and right reverse into a limited opening
Hill start up
Hill start down
Reverse parking
Turn in the road
Bay parking
Moving off (straight or at an angle)

The examiner will assess your driving in a number of areas, including:

Your expert handling of the controls
Your use of correct road procedure
Your ability to anticipate and act upon the actions of other road users
Judgment of speed
Judgment of distance
Consideration for other road users
Expert use of the DSA ms-psl hazard routine

The hazard perception skills that were introduced at part one, and the foundation knowledge that you developed during your part one studies, should now be further developed as your trainer introduces you to the high standard of driving and professional competence you will need to pass this test.

Every manoeuvre should be explained, demonstrated and practiced in great depth. It is vital that you build your driving skills to a very high standard at the part two stage. Your part 2 knowledge will lead to part 3 success. Never forget how important part 2 actually is.
